The dark glittering sky looked back at us when suddenly we
heard a voice. “Ladies, it is time for us to proceed to our next destination.”
Hubert confirmed. In confusion, we all followed Hubert who led us out of the
cave. Approaching the exit, we all noticed that there was a chopper which had
landed just a few meters away from the entrance of the cave. It was now evident
that the trembling sound was from the landing of the chopper.
Nervously, we all boarded the chopper not knowing what to
expect next and we sat in silence as we observed the chopper taking off into
the dark skies. The ride was quite short as it took about fifteen minutes and we
were landing somewhere in the deep sea on a big white vessel. The vessel was
lit everywhere and it sounded like there was a party going on. Loud music could be heard coming from the
vessel as well as loud chattering. It was obvious that those people down there
were having a lot of fun. As soon as we had stepped down from the chopper, the
group dispersed and suddenly, I realized that I was left standing all alone
with Hubert and for a moment there was an awkward silence. Hubert had a way of
making the atmosphere relaxing. His warm smile and his gaze would make even the
stranger he met for the first time be at ease. “Come with me.” He called out
excitedly as he led me by the hand. He had a way of making me feel comfortable
and safe around him.
Going down the lit carpeted staircase that led to a hallway
we could hear the noise from the party fading slowly into the thin air. The
hallway led us to an isolated room which had been well arranged with nice piece
of furniture. It was a decent place to sit and have quiet conversations. Hubert
picked a spot at the corner of the room where we sat facing each other. We both
knew that we had few hours before Hubert flew back to his town and we would
probably not see each other again. He was a very busy man and the state needed
him more. The dim lighting in the room made the ambiance so romantic and the
vacuumed red wall to wall carpet was neat. He could not stop smiling whenever
our eyes met. “This feels good you know, being away from my pressured
responsibility.” Hubert uttered softly. The entire week had been a busy week
for him as he had countless of state meetings to attend.
There was a very big contrast between this person that sat
right before me and that person I used to watch on media when I tuned in to
watch the current affairs. Surprisingly, not once had he discussed politics in
our conversations something that deepened my liking. He was firm but very
gentle. He appeared to be very strict at the same time very kind. It was like
being around a lion with a lamb’s heart.
He made conversations meaningful
as he had the skill to engage one in the conversation as opposed to him doing
all the talk.
As the clock ticked so our liking grew for each other and we
could not help locking eyes and smiling at each other. It was innocent and
perfect. His woody and musky cologne filled the entire room. He spoke with a
deep, soft and stable voice that portrayed confidence. You could read
confidence written all over Hubert and yet he did not struggle to prove it. Gently, Hubert held my right hand and
confessed that he had grown very fond of me and he was sad that by sunrise he
would have to travel back to his home town. I was touched by his sentiments and
at the same time amazed at the fact that he would express his feelings freely
with no regrets. I could not hide my liking towards Hubert and he did not need
me to tell him. He could read it from eyes. The saddest reality for two people
who had shared chemistry was that eventually we would have to part ways. We both agreed that it would be unwise to
start something that we knew very well we could not finish. We sat there
talking the entire night until it was time for us to part ways. The chopper
could be heard rumbling at the top and we knew it was time for us to leave. We
made no promises but agreed that if fate was good to us we would meet again and
with a warm cuddle we stood there for few minutes. I felt Hubert’s grasp becoming firmer as I
relaxed in his embrace. Without looking back I walked away from Hubert and entered
the chopper.
